Most visitors don’t “read” your website. They scan. In the first few seconds, they make a fast judgement:
- Do I trust this business?
- Do they look legit?
- Do I understand what they do?
- Do I know what to do next?
If the answer is “not sure”, they bounce. Not because your service is bad, because your website didn’t pass the trust test.
Here’s a simple test you can run in under 5 seconds (plus the quick fixes that usually move conversions up).
How to run the 5-second trust test
- Open your homepage (or main landing page).
- Look for 5 seconds only.
- Close it.
- Answer these 5 questions from memory.
The 5 questions
- What does this business do?
- Who is it for?
- Why should I trust them?
- What should I do next?
- Does it feel modern and reliable?
If you can’t answer these clearly, your visitors can’t either.
Pass criteria (what “good” looks like)
1) Clear headline (no guessing)
Bad: “We build digital experiences.”
Good: “Fast, trust-focused websites for service businesses.”
Your headline should say what you do in plain language.
2) Proof within the first scroll
Visitors look for reassurance quickly. Examples:
- Work samples / before-after
- Client names or testimonials
- Simple process steps
- Clear pricing direction (even “starting from” helps)
3) One clear next step (CTA)
If you show too many actions, visitors freeze. Pick one main action:
- Request a Free Quick Check (best for cold visitors)
- Start a project
- View pricing
4) Mobile-first feel
Most people will judge your website on a phone. Common trust-killers:
- Text too small
- Buttons too small
- Sections too cramped
- Weird horizontal scrolling
5) Visual hierarchy (premium spacing)
Premium doesn’t mean fancy. It means:
- Consistent spacing
- Readable typography
- Clear section rhythm
- No clutter
Quick fixes that usually boost trust (fast)
- Tighten the hero section: headline + one benefit + one CTA.
- Add one proof block: screenshot, testimonial, or simple “why us”.
- Make contact obvious: visible CTA + reliable form delivery.
- Fix mobile spacing: more breathing room = more trust.
- Speed wins: compress images, remove heavy scripts.
These are the kinds of repairs that often beat a full redesign.
